The Groce Plantation abutted the McDade Plantation and was located in the area which is now Hempstead, Waller County, Texas.  Washington County Railroad  was founded by Richard Rodgers Peebles, husband of  Mary Ann Groce, and James Wilkins McDade.   The Town of Hempstead was originally part of the Groce and McDade plantations and was founded December 29, 1856 by Peebles and McDade.
