DURHAM - Alma Taylor McDade, 89, died Thursday in Durham Regional Hospital following a brief illness. An Orange County native, she was a Durham resident all her adult life. Mrs. McDade followed the tobacco market, working as a bookkeeper in various warehouses across the southeast. She kept books for many years at Erwin Oil Co.


Mrs. McDade was a member of Glendale Heights United Methodist Church and was active in the women???s group of the church. She was also active in the women???s auxiliary of the Elks Club. She was a lifelong devoted Duke Basketball fan.


Strong in character, Alma McDade will be remembered for her good-natured spirit, generosity and sense of humor.


Surviving are her sons, Arthur Kenneth McDade Jr., of Durham and Walter Kerry McDade, of Raleigh; grandchildren, Jaja McDade and Orion McDade; great-grandchildren, Ashley and Brett McDade, and Madeleine, Roland, Teaghan and Penelope McDade; a brother, Charles Baxter Taylor, of Orange Co. and sister, Norma Cattelona, of Raleigh. She was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur ???Shorty??? McDade.


Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Tuesday from Glendale Heights United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Gregg McGarvey officiating. Burial will be in the churchyard of Walnut Grove United Methodist Church. Friends may visit from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Hall-Wynne Funeral Service.
