McDADE, Garnet Cranswick
McDADE, Garnet Cranswick - Windsor, Hants Co., formerly of Hantsport, passed
away on Monday, January 23, 2006, in Gladys Manning Retirement Home, Windsor. He
celebrated his 83rd birthday last Friday. Garnet was the third of seven sons of
the late Ernest Cranswick and Grace (Getson) McDade. Born in Parrsboro, he
attended school there and later graduated from Moncton Business College. In his
late teens, Garnet worked for a brief period at the Royal Bank of Canada in
Parrsboro. In June 1943, Garnet joined Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company
Limited of Hantsport, where he worked for 50 years, permanently retiring in June
1993. Starting as timekeeper, Garnet worked in various divisions of Minas Basin
Pulp and Power, eventually becoming Vice- president, President and Chairman of
the Board. In public life, Garnet served four years as a member of the Hantsport
Town Council. In 1977, he became mayor of Hantsport, a position he held for nine
years. He served as secretary-treasurer of the Hantsport Fire Department from
1943 to 1968. He remained an avid supporter of the HFD throughout his life.
Garnet also served as President of the Hantsport and Area Historical Society.
His business career included membership in the Canadian Pulp and Paper
Association, serving two years as Chairman of the Paperboard section of that
organization. Provincially, he served on the Board of Industrial Estates; was a
member of the Nova Scotia Business Capital Corporation, Nova Scotia Labour
Relations Board and Nova Scotia Forestry Advisory Committee. Surviving are his
daughter and son-in-law, Paula and Doug Cunningham, Lion's Head, Ont.;
granddaughter, Dr. Christy Cunningham, Hamilton, Ont.; his brothers and
sisters-in-law, Bruce and Helen McDade, Sydney; Gerald and Eudora McDade, Truro;
Eric and Beth McDade, Truro; and Clare McDade, Halifax. Garnet was predeceased
by his wife of nearly 60 years, Dorie (Turner), in June 2004; brothers, Eugene
(1971), Vernon "Bill" (1973), and Doug (2005). Also surviving are his brothers
and sisters-in-law, Ruth (Turner) and Oscar Morehouse, Victoria, B.C.; Tom
Turner, Halifax; Harry and Maxine Turner, Windsor; Paul "Pepper" and Phyllis
Turner, Victoria, B.C.; Richard "Dick" and Frenie Turner, Canard; Earle Schurman,
Mount Denson; Jean Turner, Shelburne; cousin, Madeline Powe, LaHave; many nieces
and nephews. Garnet was a long-time member of St. James United Church, Hantsport,
where a funeral service will be held on Friday, January 27, at 2 p.m., Rev.
Glennis Smith officiating. The family will have a private interment in Riverbank
Cemetery, followed by a reception in St. James United Church, Hantsport. In lieu
of flowers, donations in Garnet's memory may be made to Hantsport Fire
