McDADE, R. Douglas - 86, Halifax, passed away peacefully on September 1, 2005, in Camp Hill Veterans' Memorial Building, QEII, surrounded by his loving family. Doug was born September 21, 1918, the eldest son of Cranswick and Grace (Getson) McDade. He is survived by his wife of 61 years, Clare; daughters, Susan (Gordon) Wetmore, Halifax; Debbie Stover, Bedford; beloved grandsons, Leigh and Luke, both of Halifax. Doug is also survived by brothers, Eric (Beth), Truro; Gerald (Eudora), Truro; Garnet, Hantsport, and Bruce (Helen), Sydney; several nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by brothers, Eugene and Vernon "Bill" McDade. A native of Parrsboro, Doug received his education in Parrsboro schools and graduated from Acadia University with a Bachelor of Science degree (1939). In 1940 he became manager of the Parrsboro office of the Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company Ltd. In 1941 he enlisted in the Royal Canadian Air Force as a radar mechanic and served in Canada and the United Kingdom until his discharge in 1945. He rejoined the staff of the Minas Basin Pulp and Power Company and was manager of the Parrsboro office until 1959 when he formed McDade Lumber Company. In 1966 he joined the Nova Scotia Housing Commission in Sydney, later transferring to the Head Office in Dartmouth as manager of the Real Estate Division, retiring in 1983. Active in community affairs in his native town, Doug served as a member of the town council and had been Chairman of the Parrsboro Regional School Board, vice-president and secretary of the Parrsboro Board of Trade and secretary of the South Cumberland Memorial Hospital. In his retirement he volunteered at the IWK Children's Hospital for 20 years. He was past president of the Golden K's Club and also served as secretary for several years. Cremation has taken place. Interment in Parrsboro at a later date. Visitation will be Sunday, September 4, from 7-9 p.m. in J.A. Snow Funeral Home, Windsor Street, Halifax. Memorial service will be held Monday, September 5, at 11 a.m. in St. John's Anglican Church, Dutch Village Road, Rev. Carson Baxter officiating. Reception to follow.
