Ruth McDade, age 82, died in Nashville on April 7, 2005, surrounded by family. She was the daughter of Virgil and Clara Ruth Cline of Shelbyville. Ruth was born in Valdosta, Georgia, on April 26, 1922. She was married to Neil McDade of Chattanooga. Mr. and Mrs. McDade were married for 64 years and, during that time, lived in Elizabeth City and Fayetteville, North Carolina; Nashville, Maryville and Chattanooga; and Charleston, W.V. They retired to Mobile, Ala., returning to Nashville for the last three years of their lives.
Mrs. McDade was very active in the Presbyterian Church USA. She was one of the first female elders in the church and was involved in several church organizations. Mrs. McDade also volunteered for various community service agencies over the years. She worked in the family horticultural business for many years, applying pioneering genetic engineering techniques to the hybridization of orchids. She was an avid reader with a strong interest in the origins and usage of language. In her early years, she worked as a proofreader for a small Tennessee newspaper and worked briefly as a legal secretary. Ruth was actively involved in the school system during the years her children were at home.
She is survived by two sisters, Naomi (Bill) Thompson and Mickie (John) Floyd, and two brothers, Roy (Mildred) and Virgil (Anne) Cline, who reside in Middle Tennessee. She is also survived by her two children, Dana Battaglia (Richard) of Nashville and Mark McDade of Colorado, as well as two grandchildren, Erin and Zachary, also Colorado residents.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, April 11, at 2:00 p.m., at Second Presbyterian Church located at 3511 Belmont Blvd., Nashville, TN 37215. The church phone number is 615-292-3343. Reverend Jim Kitchens, pastor of Second Presbyterian Church, will officiate.
