Walter Burke McDade Sr.

Lexington—Walter Burke McDade, Sr., 89, of Lakeview Church Road, Linwood, died Saturday, February 5, 2005 at his residence after declining health.

Born October 27, 1915 in Old Forge, PA, he was a son of Augustus McDade and Helen Burke McDade. He retired from the US Army as Master Sergeant after 20 years of service. He was a member of the 101st Airborne during World War II and participated in the D-Day invasion at Normandy and the Battle of the Bulge and was awarded the Bronze Star with Oak Leaf Clusters and two Purple Hearts. He later served in the 82nd Airborne and served in the 187th Airborne during the Korean Conflict. He also had been a ROTC instructor at the University of Tennessee and North Carolina State University. After his military service, he retired from the VA Medical Center in Salisbury. As an active member of Greer's Chapel United Methodist Church, he sang in his church choir for 32 years and taught Sunday School.

He was preceded in death by his son, Walter Burke McDade, Jr., a daughter, Theresa Potts, and a sister, Catherine McDade.

Survivors include his wife, Christine Watson McDade of the home; two sons, Greg McDade and wife Melodie of Lexington, and Michael McDade of Apex and Renee McDade of Holly Springs; one daughter, Gloria Ford and husband Steve of Lexington; eight grandchildren, Erica Potts and Shawna Potts, whom he raised, Tina Orrell, Ashley Schmidt, Brittany Loy, Patrick McDade, Adam McDade and Burke McDade; five great-grandchildren, Christopher Holder, Austin, Conner and Addison Schmidt, and Jeffrey Loy.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Tuesday, February 8, 2005 at Piedmont Funeral Home and other times at the home.

The funeral service will be 4:00 p.m. Wednesday, February 9, 2005 at Greer's Chapel United Methodist Church with the Rev. Darren Alexander and the Rev. Jimmy Myers officiating. Burial will follow at Greer's Chapel United Methodist Church Cemetery with full military rites.
