Early settler John S. Lassater and his wife Nancy came to Texas from Wilson Co, Tennessee in 1855. They were accompanied by their twenty year old son Joseph D. and a fifteen year old daughter, Frozanah. The family first settled in Red River Co. near Clarksville where they lived for several years. They came to what is now Marion Co. in 1859 or 1860, according to early deed records, letters, and newspaper clippings.
Old John S. was a pioneer farmer, land holder, and owner of several slaves. He had at least one child by a Black, a daughter named Puss Lassater, who moved to Milwaukee, WI. at an early age and never returned to Texas.

According to Beatrice Frazier-Cornish, Eva came home one afternoon, sat at the table then placed her hand underneath it and her head down upon it, lifted her head again and took a breath with a strange look on her face - then lay her head back down and was gone. She was only 44 years ago.
Beatrice said they moved to Kansas City in 1922. She also told me that Maude did indeed go to Arizona and as she spoke she said that she remembered her mother wanted to go to the funeral but couldn't because she had 4 children at home and it was too much money.

two days ago I contacted the Howard County Library. A request by me was made for information on the Law family...The librarian, Mary, said someone had just that morning dropped off some obituaries. She asked the names I was inquiring about, and in the newly received stack were 3 obituaries,,, W.H. Law and Henry Law and Henry's wife, Christine. Talk about the Hand of God!!
" Hesperia, Calif. - Henry Bathurst Law, 88, died Thursday, Feb 7 at his home.
He was a member of Pleasant Valley Lodge. He had worked at Peoples Drug Company for many years and later at a Texarkana drug store. After moving to California, he owned and operated Enterprises, a trucking company at Maywood, for 42 years.
His wife, Christine Ayers, preceded him in death in September 1984."

"....Uncle Henry was a wonderful man. He was very tall and he was always dressed beautifully...he was very dapper. And he always drove a real nice car, too. I think he had a Cadillac last time I saw him.
When Mom {Elaine (Waites) Hale} were making out the wedding list for my wedding, she said, '..you're going to invite Uncle Henry, aren't you? We have to invite Uncle Henry, Joanne.'. And..Uncle Henry and Aunt Christine came to my wedding." J. Lysinger..
JoAnn spoke to me of Uncle Henry a little while. She said they never had children. And she knew he had lived and passed away in Hesperia, California.
Of his life's work, JoAnn said"... He had a trucking or transport company of some sort, and when he sold the company, he remained as some sort of a consultant to the business--some sort of management, I think....."

Masonic history for Henry.
Two members of the Pleasant Valley Masonic Lodge in Nashville, Arkansas kindly met with me and shared a little bit of Henry's Masonic history....A little bit is the most anyone will probably ever get --
Henry became a member on - 1 October, 1923
he obtained his First degree - 6 August, 1923
his Second degree - 10 September,1923
The two gentlemen were impressed and acknowledged Henry's promotions achieved so quickly were something impressive and deserving of a great deal of respect.
His 50 year pin was recognized in 1974.

A railway bridge was being built behind their new home....I wonder if this is how Maud met J.O. Waites......why?...Maud and J.O. married in 1908. The railway was a Dierks Lbr. & Coal line, and that was the company for whom J.O. worked. It is just a guess, but I will see if I can find the connection -- if there is one.

This was Prescott's first Caumb. Presb. Church. Peggy Lloyd, curator of the Nevada County Depot and Museum, briefed me on this specific branch of the Presbyterians. She said that that time period was a hot point for 'tent revivals', so to speak, and that religious revival meetings were much more popular among the less advantaged members of communities...the poor folks. The more well off citizenry tended to be more reserved therefore staying away from the loud and demonstrative branch-offs of their religion. The Cumberland did later make decision to join with the First Presbyterian Church, stating reasons being for the Greater Good of Spreading the Message and Gaining New Believers!
