Letter from War Department to Keet McDade, dated June 10, 1931 signed by C. H. Bridges, Major General...Marriage Notes (Adeline Edna 'Edny' Fields)
"Charles McDade, Private, Captain Captain Edmond Hopson's Company, 3rd Regiment (Few's) Georgia Militia. His service commenced September 26th, 1814 and ended March 2nd, 1815."
_____________________
The following is quoted from the book "Youngblood - Armstrong and Allied Families;
"Charles McDade, son of James McDade, Revolutionary Soldier, applied for land in the new Territory of Alabama on November 3, 1817 and soon thereafter moved his family to Montgomery County locating near the little town of Mount Meigs. Due to the several brothers establishing their homes in the same locality the place was known as the "McDade Settlement."
After becoming established, Charles and his brothers entered into the religious, civic and political affairs of the county. He was on the building committee of one of the earliest churches. In 1821 he was appointed Land Commissioner in 1825.
He was married to Adeline Edna Fields in Washington County, Georgia on March 12, 1808 by James Rushing, J. P. Census records show her to have been born in South Carolina. Although a married man with three young children, he enlisted at Sandersville, Washington County, Georgia on September 23, 1814 for service in the War of 1812. He was a Private in Captain Edmond Hopson"s Co. 3rd Regiment Few's Ga. Militia was discharged on March 2, 1815. (Adj. Gen. Office, War Dept., Washington, D. C.
In her application for additional Bounty Land, dated April 17, 1855, Adeline stated that she was the widow of Charles McDade, the 1812 soldier and that she was then sixty five years of age. This places her birth at about 1790. (Dept. Archives, Washington, D. C.)
Although she signed the Widow's Declaration as "Adeline", all of her grandchildren, who knew her called her "Grandma Edny" and in some court records in Montgomery County she is listed as "Edny McDade".
Charles McDade died at Mount Meigs, on March 10, 1839 and was buried in Manning Springs Cemetery. His grave has been marked by the U. S. Daughters of 1812. (June 1998: This marker has been removed from the cemetery, probably by some family member for safe keeping.)
Alexander, eldest son of Charles McDade, was appointed administrator of his father's estate. The appraisement listed the names, ages and value of all slaves, including children; the household furniture and livestock; farming implements, buggy, carriage, wagons, etc. Among the books itemized were Bibles, Grammars, Walker's Dictionary, the writings of Gibbons, Washington, Riley's "Narrative" and the "Laws of Alabama".
Adeline, the widow, petitioned for her dower out of the following lands owned by her husband: The NE 1/4 Sec. 3 Tp 15 R20; the W 1/2 of the NW 1/4 Sec. 22 Tp 16 R 20; the NW 1/4 Sec. 27 Tp 16 R 20 and the SW 1/4 Sec. 27 Tp 16 R 20.
To each child upon marriage, Charles gave land and slaves. However, the gifts of slaves to his daughters were deeded to a Trustee, to be held for their use and benefit, as shown by the following: - "Charles McDade, in trust to Charles McDade, Jr. Negroes, in consideration of love and affection for my daughter, Elizabeth Jolly." This deed was dated a few days before the death of Charles, Sr, (Vol R, p. 294. Montg., Ala.)
Charles McDade left the following heirs: wife, Adeline; children; Alexander, Charles, John, James Wilkins, William Scott, Jane Cloud, Elizabeth Jolly, Frances, and the five children of his deceased daughter, Mary (Polly) Cloud, namely, Charles Jeremiah, Alexander, Elizabeth and James Cloud, minors. (Montg, Co. Ct. Rec.)
Following the death of her husband, Adeline Edna McDade, continued to live in the old home which was a large two-story house with five rooms on the first floor and two large rooms on the second floor for the boys, of the family. The kitchen was in the yard as was the custom of that era. (An article in the News/Journal of the East Montgomery County Historical Society, "A Country Gentleman: Ira Davies McClurkin, Jr." dated February 14, 2000, states that the house in which they lived was built by Charles McDade who was a veteran of the War of 1812. He further stated, that it was a very advanced
house for its time. It had a cement bathtub and water piped inside in the early 1900's. The same tub is now used for a water trough.) A letter dated 11/3/1926, from Mrs. Mary Hill, of Mount Meigs, who knew her grandmother, stated "Grandmother Edny came from near Sandersville, Ga. The family came in the year 1821, I think. I do not know when she was born. She managed her own plantation after Grandfather's death. She loved to read the Bible and was fond of stories of the early navigators. She possessed a fairly good education for her day. She was of medium height and fair complexion, hair inclined to gray, as near as I can remember."
A grandson, Charles McDade, wrote in October 1922, as to our great ancestors, I know very little. My father's father was dead before I was born. I heard grandmother talk of them. I heard her talk of the store, "McDade and Bynum" at Mount Meigs and of the Indians and the old 16 section. I have heard her talk of the trip from Georgia, camping out at night in the wilds of Georgia and Alabama, until they landed at Mount Meigs."The given names of Adeline (Fields) McDade's parents are unknown. It is said she had a sister, Nancy, who married a Mallette. This may be true, since Alex McDade, brother-in-law to Adeline was the guardian of Jesse and William Mallett, in 1830, Montgomery County, Alabama.
Zachariah and Lemuel Fields, of Washington Co, Georgia, where Charles and Adeline married, applied for Alabama land in 1817, and lived in the same general section of Montgomery County. This fact would lead one to believe that they were related to Adeline, perhaps her brothers.
Adeline McDade died at her home near Mount Meigs, August 26, 1874, and was buried in Manning Springs Cemetery next to her husband. Only two of her children survived her. Her son Charles, was appointed administrator of her estate. Since the administrator and her other son, James W. had received advancements of more than their distributive share, the estate was divided into six parts, for the benefit of the children of her deceased sons and daughters. (Admix. Rec. A, p. 116, Montg. Ala.)
It is of interest, that at the time of her death, she not only owned the land set aside as her dower, in her husband's estate, but had acquired much additional land.
The following was quoted from the book "Youngblood - Armstrong And Allied Families", written by Frances Youngblood and Floelle Youngblood Bonner. They wrote;
"Fannie Armstrong Youngblood had always felt a deep sense of love and appreciation of her grandfather, Charles McDade, and his wife, her grandmother, Edna Adeline Fields, with whom she lived after the death of her own mother. She often told her children and grandchildren of her grandmother's bravery and fortitude. She remembered the day the "Yankees" threatened to burn down " Grandmother Edna's home and how this spirited old woman marched with head held high and flashing eyes to the Federal Captain and told him what his soldiers had threatened if she did not tell them where her gold and silver were hidden.
The men of the family were either off at war or already killed. A few of the slaves had " followed the Yankees off", and only she and her five year old granddaughter, along with the loyal slaves, were left at the plantation. She told the soldiers that her gold and silver were all gone as well as food, stock and everything else of value but if he would give her a few minutes to get some clothing together for the baby girl, they were Welcome to burn the house. The Captain, who was seated on a horse in the front yard, dismounted and walked up on the porch. He ordered, "If any of you harm this lady or her grand-daughter, you will be shot. Forward March." In less than five minutes not a Yankee could be seen.
"I wish I could lay a rose on the grave of that Yankee Captain for his kindness to my grandmother," she often told her children.
Another story she loved to tell was of her grandmother killing a panther. According to the story: "Grandmother Edna was busy inside her home one day when she heard the frantic bellowing of one of her fine milk cows. She knew that the cows were supposed to be in the pasture at that time of day and if one of them had come up to the house something was wrong. She rushed out of the back door towards the barns and what she saw was terrifying even to a pioneer woman. On the back of the cow was a huge panther, clawing into the flesh of the cow who was screaming in agony, writhing in pain and making desperate efforts to dislodge the fierce animal from her back. Grandmother Edna grabbed a rail from the top of a fence around the cow lot and began beating the panther with it with all her strength. One of the slaves, hearing the commotion, ran to help, but by the time he arrived, Grandmother had killed the panther or at least rendered him insensible, so that her helper could finish the job. When asked why she took such a risk, she explained that her one thought was that the ferocious beast might attack her children who were playing in the yard. This episode happened soon after the family moved to Alabama, about 1818.
Knowing these stories it is not difficult to believe another narrative of her fortitude as told by one of her great grandsons, Oscar McDade, the son of Dr. James McDade, who was a well known physician and surgeon of the state.
One evening when several of Grandmother Edna's descendants were sitting in Oscar's living room discussing family traditions he told this story: "I have heard the "old timers" tell that when Grandmother Edna came from Georgia with her husband, his brothers and sisters and their families, she walked beside the wagons, clad in old clothes with her brilliant red hair hanging about her shoulders and carrying forty thousand dollars in gold strapped around her body under her clothing. The men of the family who knew of her strength of character and had confidence in her ability to master any emergency had entrusted the safe keeping of the gold to her. With her positive thinking she adopted this disguise, as it were, to conceal the fact that the caravan was carrying such a huge sum in gold and to forestall the possibility of being robbed en route by outlaws and thieves who frequently swooped down upon pioneers going through the Indian Nation into the new lands of Alabama and further west." Part of this story is true, if not all, for the McDades reached Mount Meigs with a great deal of money and bought thousands of acres of land, built good homes and opened the first store in the community.
For many years Fannie Youngblood had collected bits of family genealogy but her busy life had not given her the time to accomplish much along these lines. Now that her husband was gone and the children grown, she was free to work diligently. One of her first goals was to honor her grandfather, the husband of her courageous grandmother. As a child she had sat at her grandmother's knee and heard her tell of her grandfather's services in the war of 1812. She knew by heart, the story of the Battle of New Orleans and of her grandfather's participation in it, as well as the part taken by two of his brothers, William and Alexander. She visited as many of the older relatives as she could and wrote numerous letters to others asking for family history. From the War Department at Washington and the Pensions Bureau she secured proof of the military service of many of her ancestors. She had been a member of the U. S. Daughters of the War of 1812 for several years and was an active worker, serving as Vice President of the Charter Chapter of Alabama. Finally her plans were completed for honoring her grandfather and the day set for dedicating an official marker at his grave. The newspapers of the state gave much publicity to the event and the complete story as it appeared in the Fraternal Herald, published at Birmingham, together with a lovely picture of her is quoted;
GREAT WARRIOR IS HONORED BY ALABAMA
Memorial Services for Charles McDade One Hundred
Fifteen Years after Battle of New Orleans
More than one hundred and fifteen years after Charles McDade fought with General Andrew Jackson at this historic battle of New Orleans, the State of Alabama officially recognized this war record with inspiring patriotic memorial exercises held on Sunday afternoon, June 22, 1930, in the old family cemetery at Mount Meigs, Alabama, where his descendants have lived since the day that Indians and wild animals made life exciting and dangerous for the pioneers.
While the exercises were under the auspices of the U. S. Daughters of 1812, with Mrs. Robt. H. Woodrow, State President for Alabama, presiding, assisted by members of Charter Chapter and the State Chapter, high government officials and other patriotic organizations joined in honoring the soldier. Hundreds of old neighbors and friends as well as descendants of old slaves gathered around the tomb for the exercises.
During the impressive ritual services the official bronze marker bearing the name and military service of the veteran was unveiled by his granddaughter, Mrs. William Youngblood, who is the only daughter of the late Col. James F. and Frances (McDade) Armstrong. In removing the flag of the War of 1812 which veiled the marker, Mrs. Youngblood said:
"Relatives, old neighbors and friends: Today is a hallowed day in my life. For years I have planned and worked and dreamed of a reunion of the descendants of my grandfather in this pioneer cemetery, Manning Springs, and today my dreams have been realized.
"Lives of great men all remind us
We can make our lives sublime,
And departing leave behind us
Footprints of the sands of Time."
"Our forefather has indeed left his footprints for us who must "carry on." He was inspired by his faithful wife, Edna, who was one of the most courageous women of all times and one who bore the vicissitudes of life with great fortitude.
I deem it a most sacred privilege to be permitted to unveil this bronze marker to my grandfather in commemoration of his valiant services in the War of 1812."
The governor of Alabama and Mrs. Bibb Graves, whose forefathers were also pioneers of the Mount Meigs neighborhood, were both present and paid tributes to the soldier. Gov. Graves, a hero of the World War as the commanding Officer of the Alabama Calvary Regiment, which was later converted into the 117th Field Artillery, saw service overseas. He urged those present to carry on the work begun by the pioneers in building the grand old state of Alabama and to band together to keep from our shores those who would destroy our nation's ideals.
Mrs. Graves in her usual charming manner spoke in behalf of the Sophie Bibb Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy which she represented, an honor which she stated she appreciated deeply as this Chapter was named for her grandmother, the brilliant Sophie Bibb.
In recognition of the veteran's contribution to the early history of Alabama, Mrs. Marie Bankhead Owen, a life long friend of the family, placed a wreath of immortals on the tomb in behalf of the State Department of Archives and History.
Mrs. Owen is the daughter of the late Senator John Hollis Bankhead, to whom is given the distinction of being the only man ever to appear on the floor of the United States Senate in the uniform of the Confederacy. This took place on the fiftieth anniversary of the close of the War Between the States when the Confederate Veterans met in the nation's capitol. Senator Bankhead, who was a veteran of the war, donned his faded Confederate uniform and walked into the Senate. The tremendous ovation he received touched him greatly.
Judge Leon McCord of Montgomery made an inspiring patriotic address. He paid tribute to several descendants whom he knew personally and referred to them as "running true to vine."
Others taking part were Mrs Dan T. Smith, Mrs Robert T. Comer and Miss. Helen Gaines, all of Birmingham, representing Charter Chapter, U. S. Daughters of 1812; Mrs. Albert J. Pickett, Mrs. J. Warren Jones and Mrs. Leon McCord, representing the Sophie Bibb Chapter, U. D. C.: Mrs. J. M. Lancaster and Mrs S. S. Crittenden representing the Ladies Memorial Association, The oldest Memorial Society in the United States; Mrs. Frank M. Jefferies, representing General Sumter Chapter, D. A. R.; Hugh E. McClung, representing the Department of Alabama, American Legion; Mrs. Hugh E. McClung, State President of the American Legion Auxiliary; Rev. William, pastor of the Methodist Church, Mathews, Alabama and Rev. T. C. Cassaday, pastor of the Methodist Church of Montgomery.
Charles McDade, the 1812 soldier whose grave was marked was a member of Captain Edmond Hopson's Company, 3rd. Regiment of Georgia Infantry, commanded by Col. Ignatius Few, who has been noted in the histories and genealogies of Georgia. He was born in Warren County, Georgia in 1784 and died in 1839. He enlisted September 23, 1814 and was discharged March 2, 1815. He married Miss. Edna Fields of Washington County, Georgia prior to moving to Alabama. They had nine children.
Historians state that Charles McDade was with Andrew Jackson at the Battle of New Orleans which was fought on January 8, 1815, when the famous battle behind the cotton bales took place. When Gen. Packenham, Commander of the British Army, was killed hie sword was given to General Jackson who magnanimously gave it back to the British. When the Packenham war mementoes were divided after his death, this sword fell to Henry Hill of England, father of Dr. Robert Hill of Mount Meigs, and in the course of time as the sword was handed from father to son, according to English custom, it finally reached Dr. Hill whose wife, Mary McDade, was a great granddaughter of Charles McDade, who helped defeat Gen. Packenham at New Orleans. So the British General's sword after years of travel from England to America, back to England, back to America, finally found its way to the home of the granddaughter of one of the men who had helped bring defeat to its original owner.
Charles McDade was not the only soldier of his family. Two of his brothers were also in the War of 1812; William, who enlisted November 14, 1814 at Sunbury, Ga. in Captain James Hamilton's Company of Georgia Volunteers Artillery and Alexander, who was a Sergeant in Captain Henry Crowell's Company of Georgia Volunteers. There were probably other brothers also in the War of 1812, but the military records of the three named were secured from the War Department and are accurate historical facts.
These three brothers, with two others , James and John, and a sister, Mrs. Hetty Cobb, moved to Alabama while it was still a Territory. Their father James McDade, Sr. came on a visit to his sons and daughter and died while at Mount Meigs. He was the first person to be buried in the Manning Springs Cemetery.
According to Robertson's History, "Early Settlers of Montgomery County" published in 1892; "The McDade brothers, four in number, moved to Alabama from Georgia and settled in Mount Meigs, which was at the time the center of the social and political life of the County. The McDades were regarded as among the best citizens of the county, in easy circumstances and William, the owner of the prettiest home in Mount Meigs. The store, McDade and Bynum, which was probably the first store in the settlement, was owned by one of the brothers (Alexander)."
Charles McDade amassed a large fortune in this new territory, owned thousands of acres of land and many slaves, but they were all swept away by the Civil War.
At the conclusion of the Memorial Exercises former slaves and their descendants gathered around the tomb and sang a group of spirituals as only Southern plantation Negroes can sing. As one visitor remarked, "We stepped back an era in history today and the singing of the old plantation melodies was a fitting climax to the services."
Among those present were four grandchildren; twenty six great grandchildren; twenty one great great grandchildren; one great great great grandchild, many great grand nieces and nephews and a host of other relatives and friends."
