General:
James Francis Armstrong, youngest son of James W. and Dollie (Tucker) Armstrong was born in Virginia, about 1825. A son of James Francis Armstrong stated that his father's mother had gone to Virginia to visit her relatives, the Tuckers of Dinwiddie County, and that she had a brother living there by the name, of Bartley or Beverly or a name beginning with a B, as near as he could remember. That his father had frequently told him that Virginia was the place of his birth.Marriage Notes (Frances McDade)
When it is known that Dollie's father, Joseph Tucker, died in that county, late in 1826, it is reasonable to assume that the statement is true. The Alabama census for 1880 lists Virginia as the state of birth of James Francis Armstrong.
James F. Armstrong was married to Frances McDade, at Mount Meigs, Alabama, December 20, 1847, by H. Clemons, J.P. (Marriage Bk. E, p. 421) Prior to the ceremony, Frances deeded her slaves to Edward Burch, as Trustee for her, in which her fiance concurred.

Know all men by these presents, that whereas a marriage is intended to be had and solemnized between James F. Armstrong and Frances McDade and whereas the said Frances McDade is possessed of certain Negro slaves, viz: Caroline about 20 years of age; Jane about 18 years of age; Linda about 15 years of age; Lewis about 12 years of age; Linn (or Sim) about 12 years of age; and Peter, an infant about six months of old, now therefore in consideration of the promises and of one dollar paid by Edward W. Burch to the said Frances McDade, the said Frances McDade doth hereby assign, set over and transfer to the said Edward W. Burch all of the above described slaves together with their increase. To have and to hold the same to the said Edward W. Burch, his heirs and assigns forever, but upon the special trust and for the uses and purposes following and none other. First, that from and after the solemnization of the said marriage and during the coverture of the said James F. Armstrong and Frances McDade, the said Edward W. Burch shall receive the profits arising from the labor of said slaves and the said income arising from the same of every nature and description and after deducting incidental expenses shall apply the profits to the support and maintenance of the said Frances and the heirs of her body, and the balance, if there be any, to pay over to the said Frances upon her sole and separate receipt therefore and free from the control or interference of her said husband or any other person. Secondly; In case of the decrease of the said Frances without heirs of her body lawfully begotten the said Trustee hold the said slaves and their increase to and for the use of the said James F. Armstrong. The object and intent of this instrument is that the said Trustee shall hold the said slaves and their increase together with the profits arising therefor to and for the sole and separate use of the said Frances McDade and the Heirs of her body and in case of the decrease of the said Frances McDade, after marriage and after a child or children born then the said Trustee shall hold the property to and for the use of the said child or children.

This contract is in box 133, Montg. Co. Ct. House, under name of Alexander McDade.
Following the death of Frances (McDade) Armstrong, her husband Jas. F. Armstrong married, June 6, 1861, Mrs. Eleanor Ann Reynolds. No children by this marriage.
James Francis Armstrong rendered service for the Confederacy during the Civil War. He joined the forces as a citizen and while engaged in making salt for the Confederate Government was captured by the Federals, Sept. 29, 1864, and imprisoned at Fort Pickens, Florida, on Santa Rosa Island. He escaped. However, the records in the Dept. of Archives, Confederate Records Section, Washington, D. C. state that he, with others, was "released by Special Order #250, on account of old age and long confinement." At the time he was thirty-nine years of age and the order was dated twenty-four days after he was captured.
He died in Montgomery, Alabama, July 7, 1893, while visiting at the home of a son. He is buried in the Hopewell Cemetery, at the home place, near Mathews, Alabama.
His three sons followed him into the Masonic Order, two of whom, James and Charles, being initiated the same day, Jan. 1, 1873, in the High Log Lodge, #193, which their father was Master. The Youngest son, Andrew Jackson, was initiated, May 17, 1878, at age twenty-one. James Francis and Frances (McDade) Armstrong had six children.
