James was a rural physician around Mount Meigs. Edeelene Tucker Jones tells a story her mother used to tell her about how James would come by her house in his buggy to pick up some of the children to go on his rounds with him. The children would climb in the buggy and cover up with blankets to keep warm.
At the time of the 1910 census, he was living in the household of Joseph and Eliza )McDade) Plyler and also at the time of his death in 1915.
James Madison and Sarah "Sallie" Adeline (McDade) McDade are both buried at Manning Springs Cemetery.

James Madison 'Mac' McDade

Mac was born Sept. 26, 1917, in Forest City, N.C., and passed away peacefully on July 19, 2004, leaving behind his beloved wife of 63 years, Geraldine "Gerry," and two loving children, James M. McDade Jr., a retired CHP officer, and wife, Sheila of Rocklin; and Nancy LaSarte and husband, Ben of Cameron Park; and two grandsons, Danny and Anthony LaSarte.
Mac served in the Army and U.S. Air Force for 32 years. During World War II, he fought in the Philippines, all the way to the battle for Manila. Mac and his family were stationed in British Guyana, South America, Trinidad, Puerto Rico, England and Japan, and retired as chief master sergeant at Mather Air Force Base in 1968.
Mac and Gerry returned to Vacaville and settled into retirement, spending many summers fishing for salmon on the Klamath River and traveling throughout the country. He will be greatly missed by his family and friends, and remembered as a true gentleman, loving husband and father.
Friends are welcome for visitation from 1 to 5 P.M. Sunday and are respectfully invited to attend the grave side service at 10 a.m. Monday, both at Mount Vernon Mortuary and Memorial Park, 8201 Greenback Lane, Fair Oaks.

In a letter dated Thurs. Aug 13, 1998, Mr. N. Winfield, wrote, "James W. McDade was a mover and shaker. He and Dr. Richard R. Peebles laid out the town of Hempstead, in Waller County, Texas. and attempted to start a town on the west bank of the Brazos River near Chappell Hill. It was planned around a ferry, and also served as a steamboat port for cotton being shipped to Houston. When the Washington County Railroad was built, in the late 1850's, all of the little river ports died. No more cotton to ship, no more towns. The town of McDade was named for him. He is supposed to be buried in the family cemetery between Hempstead and the Brazos, but I am told that he doesn't have a tombstone."Marriage Notes (Caroline Tennessee F Cooper)
James W. McDade died during a yellow fever epidemic of 1867.
He became a charter member of Hubert Masonic Lodge #76, Chappell Hill, Texas, October 19, 1850. Formerly a member of Graham Masonic Lodge #20, Brenham, Texas.

The following article, sent in by Edith Penelope (Penny) Edwards, was written by our cousin, Sara Must, for a publication her genealogy club puts out each year:
JAMES McDADE, A REVOLUTIONARY SOLDIER, AND HIS WIFE, ELISABETH
"On April 9th, 1798, James and his wife Elisabeth sold 100 acres of land on Rocky Comfort Creek, in Warren County, Georgia, to Robert Barton for 50 Pounds Sterling. James was listed as a planter. Both James and Elisabeth signed the indenture. It was unusual that both could read and write at a time when not all men were literate and very few women were given any kind of educational opportunity. (Deed Book A. pg. 453, Warren County, Ga.)
"This sale of their property is also found recorded in "Quaker Records" by Davis, pg 240.
"The fact that both could write might be attributed to their Quaker background, for most Quakers believed in literacy for their membership, in order to read and properly interpret the Bible.
"A map of Georgia of 1777 shows a Quaker Road from Warrenton southeast to Waynesboro, and apparently many Quakers migrated into Georgia and claimed lands in or near many of the early settlements. Many Quakers also settled in North Carolina and later migrated to other states. This was probably the pattern for the McDade family, for research on the McDade name indicates they migrated
from the Carolinas to Georgia.
"In 1793, James McDeed was listed as a land owner in Wilkes County, Georgia, Capt. Newson's District No. 7, owning 300 acres of pine land. The tax list shows one free white male over 21 years old. The value of the land was appraised at 15 pounds, the amount of each person's tax at 22 shillings, 11 3/4 pence.
"The next listed taxpayer was a James Wilkins.
"Elisabeth's family name is not known. No record has been found which would provide this information. It has been speculated by Frances Youngblood and Floelle Y. Bonner, in their book, Youngblood-Armstrong and Allied Families", that Elisabeth's family name was Wilkins as a son, grandson, and great grandson were all named James Wilkins McDade and the Wilkins family lived in the same area as the McDades in Georgia and the Carolinas.
"On the tombstone of James McDade's son, also named James, found at Manning Springs Cemetery near Mount Meigs, Alabama, the inscription states that he was born in Warren County, Georgia, on May 13th, 1788. We know from
this information that Elisabeth and James had settled in Warren County by that
time.
"Warren County Georgia was created from Wilkes, Richmond, and Washington

"Rocky Comfort Creek has two prongs joining and flowing south into the Ogeechee River. It is forty miles long. Other streams flowing into Rocky Comfort Creek are Golden and Whetstone Creeks. The north fork of the Ogeechee River is on the western boundary of Warren County. James McDade's land was on the Watery and Bon Branches of Rocky Comfort Creek.
"Since James owned 300 acres of the land and sold 100, it might be presumed that he continued to live on the remaining acres for a period of time.
"We do not know when James and Elisabeth moved from Warren County, nor where they moved to, but the Augusta Chronicle newspaper published, on July 6, 1805, a list of persons who had letters remaining unclaimed at the Post Office, and James McDade was on the list. On July 4, 1807, Elisabeth was listed as having an unclaimed letter.
"In the 1805 Georgia Land Lottery, Charles McDade won land in Oglethorpe and Washington Counties; James in Washington County; Thomas in Richmond County; and William in Richmond and Washington Counties. A John McDaid won land in Greene County. (1805 Georgia Land Lottery by Wood, pg. 218)
"Presumably, the McDades who won land in this lottery were the children of James. It is possible, however, that the James who won land in Washington County was the elder James and not the son who was seventeen years of age at the time.
"It is not known when James and Elizabeth were married, but their oldest son, William, was born in 1778, in South Carolina, and we can presume that it was about 1777 or prior to that year. Their daughter, Henrietta (Hetty), was also born in South Carolina ca.. 1781. The other children -- Charles , John, James and Alexander were born in Georgia. "It was during this time in South Carolina that James McDade served in the Revolutionary War. The certificate of payment for service reads:

"In the Colonial Records of North Carolina, there is a record of a land grant for a James McDade on Jan. 8, 1760, in Anson County. It is probable that this was not James the Revolutionary soldier, as several family genealogists have suggested. If so, James would have been about 20 years old at the time of the land grant, thirty seven at the time of the Revolution, and about forty years old when his first child, William, was born. Considering this information, I believe that the purchaser of the land was the father of James, the Revolutionary soldier.
"Alabama Territory was established March 3, 1817 by an act of Congress. Shortly after this, the sons of James and Elizabeth applied for additional lands at the Cahaba, Alabama Land Office. Under the existing laws, purchasers were required to buy on the installment plan. Later, land was purchased for cash. The earliest application of the McDades was dated August 22, 1817. "When the McDade sons moved to Alabama they settled in a section of the state that is about 14 miles east of Montgomery. The daughter and her husband settled in Montgomery. One son Alexander, remained in Georgia with an Aunt Sewell (her married name), who was a sister of Elizabeth.
'James went to Alabama to visit his children shortly after the death of his wife. He died while on his visit and was the first person to be buried in the Manning Springs Cemetery. The grave site was not marked.
"The Manning Springs Cemetery, also known as the McDade Cemetery, was once
a part of a plantation. It was dedicated as a cemetery by the owner whose
daughter and son had married McDades. The cemetery is still in use by descendants of the family who remained in that area although the land is now owned by a Negro family.
"Elisabeth, it may be assumed from the family's oral history, died about the time the children moved to Alabama in 1818 and James died shortly after.
"The McDades helped to establish churches and the Masonic Lodge in the "McDade Settlement", which was about three miles from Mount Meigs, and near a small place now known as Cecil, Alabama. The first store in Mount Meigs was McDade's & Bynums.
"According to W. G. Robertson's history, "Early Settlers of Montgomery County", which was published in 1892, "the McDades were regarded as among the best citizens of the county, in easy circumstances; and William, the owner of the prettiest home in Mount Meigs." James McDade served as Justice of the Peace for many years.
"War records reveal that Alexander, Charles, and William were soldiers in the War of 1812 from the state of Georgia. William enlisted November 14, 1814, at Sunbury , Georgia, in Capt. James Hamilton's company of Georgia Volunteers Artillery; Alexander was a sergeant in Capt. Henry Crowell's Company of Georgia Volunteers; and, Charles was a member of Capt. Edmond Hopson's Company, 3rd. Regiment of Georgia Infantry.
"An interesting footnote to the service of Charles in the War of 1812 is that he was in the Battle of New Orleans, which was fought on January 8, 1815, when the famous battle was fought behind bales of cotton. General Packenham, commander of the British army was killed, and his sword was given to General Andrew Jackson, who returned it to the British. When the Packenham war relics were divided, the sword was given to Henry Hill of England, father of Dr. Robert Hill of Mount Meigs. The sword was passed down from eldest son to eldest son, according to British custom, and eventually being given to Dr. Robert Hill, whose wife, Mary McDade, was the granddaughter of Charles McDade, who had helped in the defeat of the British at New Orleans. "My research on the McDade family began when I found the tombstone of Martha "Patsy" McDade in a cemetery in Sabine Parish. Martha was my mother's grandmother and was married to Henry Tatum, my mother's grandfather, in Montgomery, Alabama. I became interested in the family because it was obvious that much foresight had been used in planning the inscription on the stone. All genealogical information that could be wished for had been included. It was easy from this information to trace her family back to Montgomery County, Alabama. When her father's tombstone was found by family
members, we found the same type of genealogical information on it. Her father was James, son of the Revolutionary soldier in my text. Because of the information on his tombstone, I was able to write the narration of James and Elisabeth. My one regret is that with a family so interested in detailing their own
lives, they did not bother to record the family of Elisabeth. Perhaps a search of Quaker records, if any survive for Georgia, South or North Carolina, will reveal information about Elisabeth and her family."
