- THURSTON: Nellie Gladys (McDade), 92, of Lancaster, passed away at Weeks Medical Center, Lancaster, Friday, Jan. 10, 2003, after a brief illness.Marriage Notes (Sylvanus W. Thurston)
Born in Maidstone, VT, Dec. 29, 1910, she was the daughter of Gilbert H. and Ora (McLain) McDade. She grew up in Maidstone and went to Groveton High School, graduating in 1930. After high school, Nellie went to Lyndon Teacher's College and graduated with a three-year certificate degree in teaching.
She taught in the Ryegate schools until her marriage to Sylvanus W. Thurston in 1940. She and her husband bought and operated a large dairy farm in Lunenburg, which they ran successfully until the early 1960s. During the 1940s, Nellie also taught in the Lunenburg school, but left teaching to help on the farm. In the early 1960s, they retired from farming, but kept the farm.
Nellie returned to teaching during the 1960s, teaching at the one-room school in South Kirby, and then teaching at North Stratford. She also returned to college, graduating in 1965 with her four-year degree in teaching from Lyndon State College. Her last teaching job was at Lancaster Elementary School, where she taught third grade.
After her husband's death in 1975, and her retirement from teaching in 1976, Nellie continued to live on the Lunenburg farm until the end of 1993. In January 1994 she moved to the Open Arms shared home in Lancaster and lived there until the time of her death.
During the past 20-plus years, Nellie has been a volunteer at Weeks Memorial Hospital, and in May 2002, she was awarded a pin for 7,000 hours of service. She is a past recipient of the Mel Gallup Award, the highest recognition awarded by the volunteer program.
Throughout her life, Nellie loved gardening, her flowers (especially dahlias) and bingo.
Nellie is survived by her son, Michael Thurston and wife Sandra of Barre; three grandchildren, Missie, Tyler and Corrina Thurston; a sister, Elsie McMann of Country Village in Lancaster; and many nieces and nephews.
At Nellie's request, there will be no calling hours or funeral service. There will be a grave side service at Ridgwell Cemetery in Guildhall in the spring.
Contributions in her memory may be made to Weeks Medical Volunteer Program, Attention: Bethany Belmore, 173 Middle St., Lancaster, NH 03584.
Arrangements are under the direction of the Bailey Funeral Home, Lancaster.

Plantation Story
In Cecil Co, Alabama, Waugh, ALA. (not listed on the map in the World Book Inc)
There was a great plantation near or close to Montgomery, Alabama belonged to McDade's, it was a large plantation with a beautiful manse. The way it was described to me, with many slaves.
The McDade's came from South Carolina to Alabama, grandaddy talked about the Carolinas.
During the Civil War the plantation manse was ravaged, burned.
Some of the old slaves got part of the land when the original tract was cut down sold off, into smaller farms. The oldest slave, Alex McDade got a smaller farm built the second house on the original land. I don't know if he was named for Alexander McDade or blood kin.
There is an old cemetery where the McDades are buried.
Now as close as I could follow this the lineage of what I know;

I Nimerod McDade born 1892, died 1955, Alabama
George Washington Long McDade born ca. 1850/53 Cecil, Ala, . He had a brother William Allen.
I Nimerod McDade had a sister Mabel does research lives Alabama
II Nimerod McDade has a son named Walter B. McDade. don't know what the B. stands for.
Now there is another set of McDade's in Nashville: A.J. McDade, Jack McDade, L.B. McDade son of a John McDade.
