THOMAS G. PICKETT, although just in the prime of life, has made his way to
the front ranks among the energetic farmers of Bossier Parish, and owing to
the attention he has always paid to each minor detail he has accumulated a
fair share of this world's goods. He was born in the parish in which he is
now living, his birth occurring in 1846, and was the eleventh of twelve
children born to Nathan and Catherine (McIntire) Pickett, who were born in
South Carolina, but were married in Mississippi, and from that State came
to Bossier Parish, La., first settling in the Point, but afterward in
different parts of this parish. Mr. Pickett was a worthy tiller of the
soil, and died in 1855, his wife having passed to her long home two years
earlier, both members of the Christian Church. Thomas G. Pickett inherits
Scotch and Irish blood of his father, and his youth was spent on the
latter's plantation in Louisiana, his education being received in Yazoo
County, Miss. At the age of sixteen years he joined Company E.,
Twenty-eighth Mississippi Cavalry, and was in all the engagements of the
Tennessee campaign and the Georgia and Atlanta campaigns, receiving a wound
in the engagement at Atlanta. He surrendered at Gainesville, Ala., in May,
1865, then spent the following year in Mississippi, at the end of which
time he returned to Bossier Parish, where he was married in 1874 to Miss
Eula, daughter of Sidney and Sallie Pope, who came thither from Bossier
Parish before the war. Mr. Pope died, however, in Texas during the war,
but his widow is now living in this parish, the widow of James D. McDade.
Mr. Pickett was so unfortunate as to lose his wife in 1880, she having
borne him two sons, one son now living. Since his marriage Mr. Pickett has
resided on his present farm of 1,400 acres, of which about 475 acres are
under cultivation, two-thirds of which he has cleared himself. The most of
his property has been obtained by his own efforts, and the cotton he
annually raises, which amounts to about 300 bales, brings him in a handsome
sum for his labor. For some time he was engaged in merchandising with E.
S. Dortch, but since 1889 he has been following this calling on his own
account, his establishment being located on his plantation and is well
fitted up. His wife was a member of the Methodist Church.

Received a pension stating:" respectfully returned to the Commr of Pensions with the information that in the case of the within named Mann, the Regimental return for May 1864, shows him absent ,detached at Weston, VA. Military
records furnish nothing in addition to that found in report from this office under date of Oct.6, 1887 herewith" " the medical records show him treated as follows: as Jas. Pierson Co.G4 VA Inf. July 6-12 .63 no diagnosis, nothing additional found. signed F. B. Ainsworth, Col., US Army, Chief of Office. These documents dated 9 May 1894. REFERENCE:
Declaration for an Original Invalid Pension dated 21 May 1887. James M. Pierson , age 45 who was enrolled on the 7 Aug, 1861 in Co. G of the 4th regiment of the WV infantry Vol. commanded by Col. Lighturn. Was honorably discharged at Parkersburg WV on the 18 day of July, 1865. Personal description given as 5'10 complexion light, hair brown, eyes light. First describes being taken ill in Louisa, Kentucky about March, 1862. with typhoid fever and again at Vicksburg, Miss. on 4 July 1863
with diarrhea, fever, chills from which he claims never to have recovered. ( Probably malaria related to the typhoid fever). Claims to have liver complaints, nervous prostration, diseased back, and disease of
the stomach. !Employment listed as farmer and apprentice blacksmith. Treated in hospital at Cered, WV and Vicksburg, Miss. and Sparkinsville, (Larkinsville) AL. Re-enlisted in Sparkinsville Ala, in 1864 and finished out the war. Discharged at Parkersburg West Virginia, 18 July 1865.
Married E. Birch in 1866. Had one son USG Pierson. Elizabeth died in 1871 in Meigs City OH.
James remarried to Mary L. Birum. Had 10 children that I know of. James was a wagoner or teamster in the civil war. Discharged with disability and received pension of 12 dollars/month. Lived in Wirt county , near Little Island Run creek. In 1887, bought ?property for sum of 734$ with a person named Boreland. Left Wirt City for ELO sometime after 1900. !On pension paper dated 15, Jan 1898 he lists living children as USG Pierson DOB 23 Spe 1868, Bell Pierson, 21 Sep 1882, Jesse C. 15 Feb, 1885, James A. Pierson, 15 Jun 1887, Ruthie H. Pierson, 15 Jan 1890, Charles M. Pierson, 11 Apr 1893. Gives Mary Biram Pierson's death date as 28 Sept 1896 and stated she died at home. Also stated he had wife
named Mary D. Owens Pierson.
Affidavits came with the pension papers indicating that Charles Buchanon lived with the family from time when Charles M. Pierson was a baby. They also state that Charles was a minor when his father died. It appears there was conflict between Mary D. Owens Pierson and Charles regarding who was entitled to pension of James M. Pierson. See records hard copy.
Mary D. Owens Pierson claimed James abandoned her in 1901. She is listed as living in Wood Co. 102 Bradley Ave. Parkersburg, WV 14 Jan 1904 Declaration of wife under act of March 3, 1899 stating that he deserted her 16 Jan 1901.
Found on the 1860 census in Meigs county living with Family, Samuel, Sarah, himself,age 18, William, John, Samuel, Sarah, Susan, Lucy. !Could have married first in West Virginia, Question whether the
marriage to Emma Sayre on page 424 of marriages is to him versus John
Samuel, Williams son. it is John Samuel Pierson, William's son. I found
them later on Beaver Co, PA census.
!. He's missing from the county from 1880 . I don't know if this marriage
is his. According to documentation received with William's papers
regarding his deserter charge, one son died as a result of war wounds.
Since Samuel was too young to enter the war and William and James are
alive, it must be that John died. Will try to get his records.
According to Keith Ashley, John J. Pierson served in Co F of the OH 174th
infantry age 18 when enlisted served 1 yr . I wrote again for his records

!John J. Pearsons enlisted 16 Aug 1864 in Portland OH before James
White Justice of the Peace. This James White is probably his uncle
James., Sarah's brother. Listed with grey or blue eyes , dark hair dark

2/25/1999. It was sent by the Washington DC Veterans Affairs office to
Nashville. They are copying the file for me. It looks to contain a wealth
of information regarding John Jackson and a wife named Rachel. Pension
was filed for 23 Apr 1889, then Rachel re-filed 26 Mar 1936. He received
the first pension for hearing loss, complete deafness left ear and partial
deafness right ear received when artillery shells went off too close to
his head.

Thoracic and abdominal viscera in fair condition, auroscopic examination
of right ear reveals an atrophied condition of the membranic tympani,
watch tick not heard even on / deafness right ear = total. Left ear with
has an eczematous exudation from entire canal, very dry and scaly
exudation tick of watch = 12/40
!Family physician Thomas F Stuart MD. had seen him probably 2-3 times
per month for six years. frequent complaints of pain in head not treated
as it was considered chronic condition. on the morning of 6 Sep 1889 I
was called to see him, found him almost entirely paralyzed, gave him the
usual treatment in such cases, under which he improved very perceptibly
until the night of the 14th of Sep 1889 when he had a second attack from
which he never rallied dying on Monday 16 Sep 1889. Reading the doctors
report it sounds as if he had an acute subarachnoid hemorrhage.
! served at the Battle of Kingston, NC. deafness caused by the heavy
discharge or artillery over his head in said battle. Testified to by
Samuel Thomas 19 Dec 1889
!Thomas Lambert was with him when the pain became so excruciating that
he stroked. Described the pain as Pain in the head and around his right
eye and circling back over his right ear . Lambert was sent to get the
doctor and by the time he returned, John Jackson was totally paralyzed.
! Ellis Birch testified that he had known JJ Pierson most of his life and
that after returning from the war he was unable to work as he had
previously. up to 1876.
! Josiah Hayman and Jesse Walker were in same unit with him. Jesse
Walker testified that at the battle of Kingston NC on or abt 9 Mar 1865
suffered injuries that led to his disability.
The 174th reg. was placed about 30 spaces in advance of our own
artillery. they kept up a continuos fire for about two hours over our
heads after this battle of Kingston I often heard John J Pierson complain
of a pain in the head and he said he could hear nothing with his right
ear
and not much with his left. He saw John J Pierson bleeding from the
ears, nose and mouth and supposed it to be caused by the heavy discharge
of cannon.
Jesse knew John Jackson prior to his enlistment and served in the same
battle with him. He was fine, until that battle.
Josiah Hayman also testified served in same unit and at same battle

!According to copies of his military papers, he enrolled at Ravenswood
16 Oct 1861 and was mustered in at Mason City 27 Nov 1861. His papers
state that he was discharged at Charleston WV 31 Dec 1863 by order of
the war dept. he re-enlisted 1 Jan 1864 in Ravenswood. The variance of
facts between these two sure convinces me that there was a William A
and a William H.
! William and two of his brothers-in-law Jasper and Issac Clem were
captured in the Battle of Cedar Creek 19 Oct 1864. Isaac and Jasper
died in POW camp. James Morgan described William Henry as crazed and
starved when he was released at Cumberland MD. Officers' testimony
that WH was never out of their sight while in the POW camp was ignored
when the pension review board decided on his claim.
