General:
Because of the large westward movement of people looking for land in the early 1800's, Mary and her young daughter Lucy, and Elizabeth and Partilda, along with their husbands, asked for and received letters of dismission from New Hope Baptist Church in 1844 and went to Gibson County, Tennessee. Both Elizabeth and Lucy died of "the fever" soon after arriving. Mary and the bereft husband husband returned to Wake County and resumed life here until their deaths. The following letter was found in Mary's papers.
State of Tennessee, Gibson County, August the 9th, 1844
Dear Sons,
"I embrace this opportunity of writing to you to inform you something of my situation at this time. I am now enjoying a reasonable portion of
health thanks be to God for the same. Hoping these lines will reach you and fine you all enjoying the same blessings. I am now at Brother
Bennett's. He and his family is all in common health. I have bin hear 4 Weeks to day. We all stopped in Dyer County 30 miles from here when we came out except Mr. Bevers. He stopped in Trenton. He and family were well last Week. James and Partilda is well. Buck has bin vary sick but is getting about a gain. "
"Elizabith was taken with the fever in July. died the 31st of July was confined a bout 2 Weeks. Lucy died the 5th of August with the nervous
fever was confined 20 days. I never saw Elizabith after she was taken sick. I and Lucy come to Brothers before she was taken and before I heard she was sick. Lucy was taken and she was so bad I could not leave her to go to see Elizabith. I hope they air both in heaven. I don't no whither Elizabith said any thing a bout Dying or no. Lucy got vary happy the day before she died. Said she hoped she had a home in heaven, a home in Jesus. The manifestation of that hope on a dying bed was a source of comfort to your poor mother. My feelings has bin indescribable and now on all that after having but one child Living here."
"Matthew Jones Rogers and McDade all started back to NC yesterday. I don't feel able to stand the fatigue of the journey back at this time and to have her taken a way from me at this time perhaps never to see her a gain is pa____ (painful ?) to my hart. O that God by his grace may unable me to bear and submit to it all patiently is my prayer but Jeremiah their is one thing yet that gives me some consolation and that is the promise you made me when I left NC that you would come out this fall. I want you to be sure and come and tell Bennet he must come two. I expect they will al give you an awful account of this country when they get back. They went in Dyor County one of the most sickly County in the district so said they have bin nowhere but from their to Brothers and James has bin to Mile's Point once. It seems like they think the hole country is like Dyer. Brother will wright to you. He has bin here 12 years and has traveled over the most of west Tennessee and will give you a correct statement of the country."
"You no people will be sick sometime any where and that we all have to die. Your father and brother you no died in a short time of each other so mite your sisters if they had bin any where else. You no Elizabith has bin in bad health for sometime. I have learned since writing the a above that Elizabith said she did not dread death. I have no doubt but you can do better here than where you air. I want you to make up your mind what you intend to do and right to me immediately. If you don't intend Coming you must come and bring me money to pay off Lucy's expenses. I don't no what they will be yet but I expect something like $65.00. Its likely if you don't move out and come out and settle Lucy's expenses that I will go back with you."
"I have never received a letter from one of you since I have bin here. I want you to wright to me as soon as you receive this letter. I want to
hear from you all very much. When you wright direct your letter to Shiloh P.O. Gibson County Tennessee. Your Uncle William Ragan lives in Hollow spring, Mississippi 100 miles south of here. I have not heard any thing from him since I have bin here. Brother heard from him and _______ (at that ?) time before I come they were all well. Your Uncle Bennet and Aunt Susan is both members of the Baptist Church.
There is good society in this neighborhood. There is hardly a family but more or less of them is professors of religion. I believe if you were out here and settled I should be perfectly satisfied. You could settle here and not be pend up as you air bin where you air. You no you and Bennet is both completely pend up where you air. Tell M. Traying (or Graying) there is plenty of good land here to sell and many places where he could settle and not be pend like where he is. Give my love and compliments to Mr. Traying (or Graying) and family. Give my love to the children and all my friends. Nothing more but remain your loving and affectionate mother."
