Bernice Verna Rigdon was born on June 19, 1919 to Thomas Marshall Rigdon and Elsie Mae Holt. At the time Marshall and Mae were living in Duffee, Mississippi. Marshall was logging during the fall and winter and farming during the spring and summer. Verna was the first of eight born to Marshall and Mae.Marriage Notes (Nimrod R McDade Jr)
Verna went to several different schools during her childhood in and around Duffee, Mississippi, which is now called Little Rock. She graduated from high school at Beulah Hubbard in Little Rock, Mississippi in 1939.
After graduation she moved to Newton, Mississippi and went to work in the Sunnyside Cafe that also served as a gas station. The cafe was owned by Madam Zoozoo. Verna also lived with Madam. It was there at the Sunnyside Cafe that she met her husband to be.
On Saturday night, March 15, 1941, Nimrod R. McDade, Jr. stopped at the service station to purchase gas for his Model A Ford. He was on his way to Montgomery, Alabama from San Diego, California, where he had just recently gotten out of the Navy.
Nimrod asked for two quarts of oil and Verna gave him two quarts of beer. This led to a whirlwind romance between the two.
Nimrod was persistent and Verna was stubborn. He insisted that they should .... now and Verna insisted insisted that she wouldn't .... until she was married.
Of course Nimrod s' version of the story is that Verna had this 8 x 10 color photograph of herself and he wanted it to take home with him. According to Nimrod, "Verna said that she went with the photograph." So he had to marry her to get the photo.
Nimrod said he would get his old car headed toward Montgomery, Alabama and before he knew it he would be back at Newton at the Sunnyside Cafe. He said that he tried to leave about three times but the old car just kept coming back to where Verna was. It looked like the only way he was going to get home to Alabama was to marry Verna and take her with him.
On Monday, March 17, 1941, the long courtship ended. Nimrod and Verna were married by H.W.F. Baughn, a Methodist Preacher in Decatur, Mississippi. Persistence won out after stubbornness persevered.
Nimrod went into the courthouse in Decatur to get the marriage license and Verna waited in the car. When the clerk asked him who he wanted to marry, he said "Wait a minute while I go ask her what her name is." So he went to the car and asked her what her name was. After he went back into the courthouse and told the clerk, the clerk wanted to know how to spell her name. So Nimrod just went back to the car and brought Verna in with him.
When the clerk asked for the three dollar fee, Nimrod turned to Verna smiling and said, "Pay the lady". After they got married, they were on their way to see Marshall and Mae before leaving for Montgomery, Alabama, when somewhere between Decatur and Duffee they got stuck in the mud and ended up spending their wedding night in the old Model A Ford, in the middle of the road.
The next morning a school bus came along and pushed them up the hill upon which they were stuck. Nimrod said that when he pulled up in front of the house, the house had a porch across the front with seven posts, and hanging onto each post was a brother or a sister.
Marshall was a little upset about his daughter getting married. As the story goes, Marshall did not talk to Nimrod for two years.
Nimrod and Verna went to live in Sylacauga, Alabama where Nimrod worked in a gunpowder plant in nearby Childersburg, Alabama during those two years. So Marshall could not speak to Nimrod even if he wanted to.
About five years into the marriage Verna became pregnant and they went back to visit with the Rigdon family in Duffee, Mississippi. It was Christmas and as luck would have it, Verna went into labor.
It was Dec 29, 1945 when she went into labor and Nimrod drove Verna and her parents to Union, Mississippi, where the closest hospital was located. On the way to Union, the front left wheel came off the car and they were stranded on the road to Union. Luckily, they found someone to take them on to the hospital. Otherwise Nimrod R. McDade, III would have been born in the back seat of a three- wheeler stuck in the backwoods of Mississippi, somewhere between Duffee and Union.
Duvall and Denver, two of Verna's brothers, came along later and found the car in the middle of the road. They took a lug-nut off of each of the other wheels and put the stray wheel back on the car. They then drove the car on to Union to Laird's Hospital. When they arrived, they asked Nimrod why he left the car in the middle of the road. He told them that one of the wheels had come off. They, of course, told him he must be mistaken, and took him outside and showed him the car with all the wheels in place.
While Verna and young Junior were in the hospital, Marshall and Mae moved to a new farm that Denver had recently purchased. It was located about eight miles from Union on the way toward Conehatta. It was there that Marshall and Mae lived until all of their children had grown and married.
On July 13, 1947, Verna gave birth to her and Nimrod's second child. They named her Judy Andora McDade. She was named after a friend of Verna's. There were no special incidents preceding Judy's birth. At the time, Nimrod and Verna were living in Montgomery, and Judy was born in Jackson Hospital in Montgomery.
Tragedy did, however, follow Judy. When she was but four years old her life was taken away. Little Nimrod (Junior as he came to be called) was playing in a friend's yard several houses down the street. Judy was riding her tricycle in the street in front of Nimrod and Verna's house. Normally this would have been perfectly safe because the street was almost a dead end and there were never any cars on that street except late in the afternoon when the men came home from work.
Judy would have been across the street playing with her friend but they had argued earlier and Judy came home and started playing on her tricycle. It was July 27, 1951, a very beautiful day, until the trash man came. The garbage truck was slowly coming up the street, stopping at each house. The driver of the truck was talking to the lady standing in the door of her house, which was directly across the street.. He was not watching for Judy.
At the last moment, the lady saw Judy and she started screaming at the driver of the truck. In the brief second that it takes to react, Judy had been knocked off her tricycle and the front right wheel of the garbage truck had rolled over her small chest. In the excitement, the truck driver backed up, driving over her again.
The McDade house was very lonely for the next eleven months. Junior got a lot of attention until June 27, 1952. On that day was the arrival of another boy. The nurse came into the room and asked what name should she put on the birth certificate.
A very close friend of the family, Judge Walter B. Jones, was standing in the room at the time. He spoke up in his deep authoritative voice and said that the child's name was Walter Burgwyn McDade, of course. He went with the nurse and made sure the spelling was correct.
Little Nimrod (Junior) was supposed to have been named "Walter" but his father was clever enough to be in Mississippi when little was born. This time, however, Nimrod and Verna were in Montgomery in Jackson Hospital again. And since Judge Jones(Judge as we all called him) had been denied a namesake twice already, he was going to make sure that this child was named Walter Burgwyn.
The Judge had never married. And to make sure that his name lingered, he persuaded his friends to name one of their children after him. In return he paid for the child to go to Harvard University. And should the young Walter decide to become a lawyer, as the Judge had done, he would also pay for him to go to law school.
Young Walter B. McDade never made it to Harvard though. While Walter was in grade school, Judge Jones died after a lengthy battle with cancer. His fortune was gone by the time he died.

According to the ages of Absalom and Mary's children. they must have migrated from Orange Co NC into Grainger Co TN by 1801. Since his brother Drury had been indentured to him in 1789 according to Orange Co. NC Court Minutes for that year, it is most likely that he came to TN at the time of Absalom's migration. It is believed by those of the Thompson family, Ann's relatives, that Ann, Absalom's mother, had come into TN at the time he came. His younger brother John Green who had been indentured to his cousin William Roach in Orange Co. NC in 1789, however, did not appear in Grainger Co. TN until several years later. These brothers--Absalom, Drury, and John Green--were the progenitors of the Grainger Co. Roaches for many years as is shown by land, tax, marriage, and census records from 1800 until present. From that county many Roach families migrated to other locations across the U S and several foreign countries.
Since family researchers have thoroughly researched, compiled, and published information about the children of Absalom Roach and Mary Middelton, and since it is not my wish to duplicate that information, I will include in detail extensive information about their third son William Henry and his wife Margaret Jane Watson and their descendents. A great mass of information has been compiled especially for John T., Alfred, and Absalom Thomas, sons of, and Drury and Green, brothers of Absalom Thomas and Mary Middleton. Little info for these men will be included in this report.
