Thomas's father, Stanmore Temple and Ann Walters, who was 15 or 16 at the time of Thomas's birth, apparently never married. Thomas was raised by his maternal grandparents and eventually adopted their name, Walters.Marriage Notes (Sarah Lugenia Shirley)
He was a farmer and owned three Negro slaves before the Civil War. One slave was a little girl, another was a girl about 18 years old, at the time of Thomas Walter's marriage, and the third slave was a young man. All three of these slaves were given to his wife Sarah, by Sarah's father. It is believed Thomas was an overseer for a large plantation owner when he was a young man. Thomas Walters was a 32nd degree Mason and when died the men of the Masonic Order officiated at his funeral service. It is not known if he attended meetings in Troy or Montgomery. Attorney Joel Murphy was a very good friend and visited in his home many times. Thomas Walters loved to sing and play the violin. He also wrote a few songs but none were ever published.
Thomas also liked to dance, and was turned out of the Baptist Church, of which he was a member, twice for dancing. He had a happy disposition.
During the Civil War he fought under General Robert E. Lee, in Virginia and Maryland. While he was stationed in Richmond, his wife visited him twice. He was away from home for four years during the war.
He fought in the Battle of Cross Keys June 8, 1862, in Virginia, and was seriously injured on this date. He was also wounded at Shepherds Town, Sept. 19, 1862, and was absent from his command, wounded at Fredericksburg, Dec 13, 1862.
He enlisted in Company I, 15th Alabama Infantry Regiment, July 3, 1861, at Troy, Alabama.
He was 27 years old and married when he enlisted. He was stationed at Danville, Va. when he was discharged through Gettysburg, Pa., July 12, 1863.
Thomas was shot in the lower part of one of his lungs. Many years later, after his return home and after he had reared a large family, he developed pneumonia and died. He had hauled corn in the sleet and rain the day he became ill. His illness began with a hard chill.
Thomas's physical description was as follows: Weight - 165 lbs., 5ft. 10in. tall, of blocky build. He had very fair skin, blue eyes and his hair was a copper color, almost reddish brown.

Last Will of Benjamin Franklin Womble.
In the name of God, Amen.
I Benjamin Franklin Womble of the county of Stoddard in the State of Missouri of the age of Fifty years being of sound mind do make and publish this my last will and Testament as follows.
1st. I request that my funeral be conducted under the direction of my beloved wife. And that my funeral charges and expenses and all my just debts be paid by my beloved wife without any administration on my Estate.
2nd I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Matilda Womble all my estate both personal and real to have and hold and enjoy for and during her natural life.
3rd I will give and bequeath all the rest, residue and remainder of my Estate both personal and Real to Martha Moore and to her bodily heirs to have and

hold and enjoy absolutely in Fee simple after the death of my beloved wife Matilda Womble and after the termination of her life estate in said estate.
4th If the said Martha Moore Now wife of William Buckner Moore should die without issue or their descendants surviving her and the said William Buckner Moore shall continue with me and my beloved wife and perform the duties of a faithful child to us and care for us during the natural life of us and each of us then I will and bequeath all the property above bequeath to the said Martha Moore (late Martha Shelby) to him the said William Buckner Moore absolutely in fee simple.
5th I will that my beloved wife Martha Womble wind up my estate and take full charge of my property both personal and Real and take my place and perform all thing touching the same as though she were duly qualified as the Executrix of this my last Will and Testament without giving my bond whatever in that behalf.

Wilson Judge of the probate Court held in and for the county and State aforesaid, personally appeared Lygon Jones who is one of the subscribing witnesses to the annexed will of B. F. Womble deceased and being by me first duly sworn depose and say That the said B. F. Womble the Testator subscribed the same in their presence and published and declared said will or Instrument of writing to be his last will and testament and that at the time of signing the same he the said testator was of sound and disposing mind and more than twenty-one years of age, and that said deponent attested said will as witness thereto by subscribing his name to the same in the presence of the Testator and of each other and at the request of the said testator.
