Henry had been blind since the age of 21. He was the County Tax Collector and Assessor for Austin County, Texas. He was listed in the Austin County, Texas Census of 1850 and 1860 as 40 and 50 years of age with birthplace as Georgia.Marriage Notes (Mary Adeline 'Polly' McDade)
Mary McDade was born in Georgia, about 1809. She married, 1/8/1828, Henry George Washington Cloud, son of Jeremiah and Elizabeth Cloud, formerly of South Carolina. (Mar. Bk. C, p. 311 Montg. Ala.)
After the death of Mary "Polly" McDade, in 1838, H. G. W. Cloud married 2nd Mary Bateman, March 1839, in Montgomery Co, Ala. Soon thereafter he moved his family to Texas, and in 1861 was residing in Austin County where his parents were living.
Jeremiah Cloud, Sr., died 3/14/1861. His only surviving sons, H. G. W. (Wash) Cloud and Francis M. Cloud applied for administration papers on his estate. H. G. W. Cloud stated that his mother was the one by law to administer, but that she was extremely old, - over seventy. Elizabeth, the mother, felt that H. G. W.
should not administer, because of his total blindness, and also, distance from her, as "he lived on the opposite side of the Brazos River." (Vol. 2, p. 60, Ct. Rec. Austin, TX.) This is the very locale where Alexander McDade, the youngest son of James and Elizabeth Wilkins McDade, lived.
